Van Diemen's Land

The name Tasmania was known by in colonial times. It was named by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman after Anthony van Diemen, Governor-General of the Dutch East Indes who sent Tasman on his voyage in 1642.

Verbs

An action or state of being. Verbs are also sometimes called 'doing' words.

Vermin

Animals, insects or plants that cause harm or annoyance, also called pests.

Victoria Cross

Awarded for feats of bravery, the 'VC' is the highest military decoration awarded to Commonwealth troops.

Victorian morality

A moral system that valued formal behaviour and very fixed gender roles. Named for Queen Victoria, who ruled the British Empire from 1837 – 1901.
