General map of the south eastern portion of Australia

The area encircled by green shading indicates the limits of the Colony of New South Wales. The thin red line, that extends down to Portland Bay, indicates the expedition route taken by Major Mitchell's party. Imagine their surprise when they discovered the Henty settlement on the southern coast of the country. This map dates to some time before the separation of Victoria from New South Wales.

Sir Thomas Mitchell, c.1850, map.
