Irrigated celery crop

Large scale irrigation projects began in the late 19th century in the North West of Victoria.  Irrigation schemes, which utilise a system of dams, weirs and locks to regulate an unpredictable water supply (i.e. the Murray River) allowed farmers to plant a wider variety of food crops such as citrus and stone fruits in an area that would otherwise not support such endeavours.
