Dear Mr. Sharman,
I received your letter of September 7th two or thee days ago and was pleased to hear that the school excelled itself in playing the “Twelfth Night” [a play by William Shakespeare]. I am sorry to say I could not be present at the Old Pupil’s Reunion but leave was not granted at that time. We have had leave for four days twice since arriving here and one weekend. The remainder of our time has been taken up bay a fairly vigorous training. At Seymour we were priding ourselves that we knew a good deal about the game [i.e., soldiering] but now we play a different tune. Rain has not interfered in the slightest with our work as we continue right through. I remember in Seymour we used to look forward to a wet day for that..
