Canvas Town
Accomodation simply could not be built fast enough to keep up with the large numbers of people coming in to Victoria during the gold rush. A tent settlement, known as 'canvas town' was set up. It was south of the Yarra, to the west side of St. Kilda Road, where buildings such as the National Gallery of Victoria now stand.
