C. J. La Trobe statue
La Trobe was first appointed as Superintendent of the Port Phillip District, then a part of New South Wales, in 1839. After separation, and the formation of the new colony of Victoria on the 1st of July 1851, La Trobe became the Lieutenant-Governor. Less than a week later Victoria was rocked by the news of the discovery of gold within a hundred miles of Melbourne.
