The German immigrants at Hill Plains

The story of the pitiful German immigrants at Hill Plains was sensationalised by reporters.  The interest that it sparked inspired the illustrated newspapers to send artists to the commune to sketch the settlement, the prophetess Maria, and her starving group of alleged 'fanatics'. Published in the Australasian Sketcher 27 December 1875
