Areas swept by bushfires, January 1939

Shows settlements, bushfires damaged areas and destroyed sawmills.

Following the Black Fire bushfires in 1939 a Royal Commission was held into the fires and the loss of life. It recommended a single firefighting organisation for country Victoria so that country fire services might be better coordinated. However it was not until after the devastating bushfires of 1944 that legislation establishing the Country Fire Authority was passed. The Country Fire Authority (CFA) commenced operation on 2 April 1945.
