Image study: Banner for Bricklayers Union

In this image bricklayers create a sense of nobility around their trade by comparing it to the grand traditions of building and architecture, in this case looking back to the Biblical story of the Tower of Babel. By making these links in people's minds, they hoped to improve public opinion of the working classes.

"Omnia vincit labor" means "hard work conquers all" in Latin. The phrase was used by the Roman poet Virgil: another Classical reference.
